CREATING THE FUTURE

After a century of innovation and creativity, another milestone for the Technion. It has won the bid for a state-of-the art world class campus for the graduate Schools of Engineering and Applied Sciences together with Cornell University, beating out teams from Stanford U., NYU, Columbia and Carnegie Mellon. The Technion was chosen for its track record and its vision.

Besides generating immense research possibilities the campus will be a hub for technology related business opportunities in New York, hosting entrepreneurs-in-residence, providing legal support for startup businesses and creating a $150 million revolving financial fund for them. The projections indicate that it will spur on 600 new spin-off companies and thousands of permanent jobs.

The campus will be a global magnet for tech talent and entrepreneurship. It will cover a two-million square feet on Roosevelt Island in the East River. The first phase is scheduled to begin in 2015 and will be completed no later than 2017. A temporary off-site campus will open next year.

After receiving its accreditation the campus will offer Technion-Cornell dual Master of Applied Sciences and doctoral degrees, among others. The campus will be organized around three interdisciplinary fields: Connective Media, Healthier Life and Built Environment.

Amazingly, it will be one of the most environmentally friendly and energy efficient campuses in the world, using solar and geothermal energy from wells. It will harvest as much energy as it consumes, and the campus’s Built Environment hub will help develop the environmental technologies it will use.

There are plans for ample community involvement, including the creation of education enhancement programs for the NY city students and teachers.

By bringing the world’s most talented and dynamic minds together with the common goal of creating a better and more promising future this project has become a paradigm for the world to emulate. If Israel’s neighbors would engage freely with her in scientific projects such as this their vision might perhaps change and they would finally understand the meaning of cooperation between sovereign democratic nations.

Unfortunately, for the time being, it would require a miracle much bigger than the one of Hanukkah, the miracle of peaceful co-existence, but Israel will never cease to dream of it or lose hope, because her humanity is what makes her unique and precious.

Hannukah and Tanya Rosenblit

You've probably didn't hear this name before.Neither did I until a few days ago.
But since these days we are celebrating Hanukkah which reminds us of the triumph of the Macabees against those who attempted to destroy our Jewish life, I thought it was pertinent to publish the following article.
It speaks about a different kind of enemies, internal this time, and in this case they speak in the name of what they think is Judaism.
A matter of concern, doubtless.

Jerusalem (CNN) -- When Tanya Rosenblit boarded an inter-city bus bound for Jerusalem from her native Ashdod Friday morning, she did not anticipate the storm it would spark within Israel.

The public bus she boarded normally carries ultra-Orthodox passengers and travels to an ultra-Orthodox neighborhood in Jerusalem.

From the seven Nobel Prize4s awarded on Saturday, December 10 five of the recipients are Jewish..
At the Nobel Academy in Stockholm, Sweden they delayed 15 minutes the ceremony to wait for the end of the Shabbat.

Dan Shejtman, from the Technion, is the tenth Israeli who receives this great honor. The other recipients are Bruce Beutler, Ralph Steinman, Adam Riess and Saul Perelmuter..

AN ETHIOPIAN WHO WAS OPERATED BY ISRAELI PHYSICIANS
SAVES OTHER CHILDREN

Yared Worde, who is twenty five years old, arrived to Israel last Sunday for a very special visit, the first since he was saved in 1999 by Save a Child’s Heart, an Israeli foundation who carries out international humanitarian projects to perform surgery on children from developing countries with cardiac problems.

Born in 1984, Yared was an orphan who lived in the streets of Addis Abeba searching for food and the basics of survival.

When he was twelve years old he was diagnosed with rheumatic cardiopathy. Yared was taken to Israel where he underwent life-saving heart surgery.

Today Yared is the principal of the “Holy School of Yared” in Addis Abeba, a school that struggles against poverty by means of education, teaching the poorest and more deprived children of the city.

Two years ago, in 2009, Yared met a young orphan, Tamru, who was in very bad state.

He was taken to the hospital in Addis Abeba from his orphanage in the north of Ethiopia because he desperately needed heart surgery to save his life.

Yared immediately contacted Save a Child’s Heart seeking help. It took a couple of weeks until Tamru was sufficiently strong to travel to Israel to undergo open heart surgery. During those weeks Yared personally took care of Tamru.

When Tamru returned to Ethiopia after his successful surgery Yared took him to his home so that he could receive tne necessary care for his recovery.

Recently Yared turned down a full scholarship for a master’s degree from an American university because he believes it is more important to stay in Ethiopia, direct the school and give the biggest number of poor children the possibility of a better future through education.

Yair is married to Netanyet and has a 2-month old baby girl called Anna Ami, named after the founder of Save a Child’s Heart, Dr. Ami Cohen, z”l, who operated on Yared and saved his life.

During his visit to Save a Child’s Heart this week Yared met children from Ethiopia, Angola, Zanzibar, Uganda, the Republic of Moldau, the Palestinian Authority and Irak, who were brought to Israel to undergo open heart surgery to save their lives. Yared spoke to them about their experience and encouraged them to be strong.

Yared also got together with the doctors who treated him thirteen years ago, when he was In Israel.

they personally wanted to blend in with the Gentile community.

Thus Samuel Goldfish changed his name to Goldwyn and Cecil B. de Mille
insisted that he was a Gentile until his death when a Rabbi officiated at
his funeral. Every single one of the original Jewish developers of the movie
industry divorced their Jewish wives and married beautiful Christian
starlets.

This includes Louis B. Mayer, Samuel Goldwyn, Jack Warner, David O. Selznick
and Harry Cohen. They gave orders to the numerous Jews they made "stars" to
change their Jewish names to Christian sounding ones. This has also included
a lot of "nosejobs" for both Jewish male and female stars. Here are but a

Welcome to Little Jerusalem, the thriving community of Jews deep in the mountains of Muslim Azerbaijan

Gyrmyzy Gasaba’s impressive High Holydays Synagogue complete with decorative Magen Davids.

The mountains are iced with white snow and there is soft blossom on the nut trees. Broad, grey and bouldered, the Gudialcay river rushes east towards the Caspian Sea; a few miles north is the border with Dagestan . This is Azerbaijan , where a hot morning sun glares off the riverside mosque's tin roof. The ancient town of Guba is known for its carpets and its walnut halva. Less known is the Jewish town on the Gudialcay's left bank.

Gyrmyzy Gasaba (in Russian, Krasnaya Sloboda or "Red Roofs") is perhaps the world's only all-Jewish town outside Israel . Where Guba seems poor and perhaps a little care-worn, Gyrmyzy Gasaba appears to be prosperous and thriving - 3,600 mountain Jews live here, wearing their Judiasm with pride, and without fear. "Shalom!" I'm greeted, time and again: "Shalom Aleichem!" Boys in kipot bustle about, and each house displays at least one large Magen David.

Azerbaijan is proud of its tolerance towards minorities. The national religion is Shia Islam, but Azerbaijanis are scorned by their Iranian neighbours to the south as bad, lax Muslims. That Azerbaijan enjoys friendly relations with Israel seems only to prove the Iranian point.

Gyrmyzy Gasaba's people are friendly, too, albeit careful. "Are you here to portray us as anthropological oddities?" asks Rav Adam. He is standing on the yeshivah steps, a slightly stooped, bearded figure, grey-shirted and impressively pullovered despite the pounding heat. I assure him that, as the child of a Sephardi-Ashenazi mixed marriage, I am not.
